East Northumberland Secondary School, now the Bay of Quinte and Central Ontario Secondary School Athletics (COSSA) champions for 2021, is sending two teams and two individuals to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) cross-country running championships Nov. 6 at Lakefield College School.
ENSS was the top overall team at the COSSA championships – the OFSAA qualifier – this past Wednesday at Dunnett Orchards in Brighton. The top two teams and five fastest individuals in each division earned a berth at the provincial championships.
Team scores are determined by the placings of each school’s top four runners with the aim to get the lowest score possible. The five individuals advancing to OFSAA are the top runners not on a qualifying team.
Also sending two teams to the OFSAA championships is Belleville’s Nicholson Catholic College while St. Theresa Catholic Secondary School is sending one while Bayside Secondary School is sending one team and two individuals, Trenton’s St. Paul Catholic Secondary School qualified three individuals, Belleville’s Eastside Secondary School and Quinte Christian High School each had one individual advance as did Central Hastings High School and Campbellford District High School.
ENSS won the senior boys race on the strength of four runners finishing within places 10 to 20. They were the only team in any division to qualifying for OFSAA without a runner finishing below 10th place.
Braden Geens was the first ENSS senior boy to cross the finish line with a 10th place finish in 21 minutes 18 seconds. Geens was followed by Owen Williams in 14th (21:48), Ethan Rivard 16th (22:07) and Michael Patrick 20th (22:28) for a four-person team total of 60. Josh Warner also ran a strong senior boys race, placing 23rd in a time of 22:34.
ENSS finished ahead of Bayside Secondary School, which qualified in second place with 67 points.
Bayside had 10 senior boys competing, including the top four of Andrew Lupenette in third (19:38), Tristan Daoust fourth (20:24), Jacob Hamstra 29th (23:00) and Adam Toop 31st (23:33). Seth King followed right behind in 32nd (23:37).
St. Paul’s Jake Alexander placed seventh overall (20:49) and was the fifth individual runner to qualify for OFSAA.
ENSS’s junior boys also won its division with 43 points, led by Aidan Molenhuis in third place (18:21), Carter Geens sixth (18:36.00), Dominic Noreau eighth (19:05) and Logan Rivard 26th (24:51). Teammate Owen Turner wasn’t far behind in 28th (26:36).
St. Theresa Catholic Secondary School from Belleville was second with 54 points as Connor Weido placed fourth (18:31), Daniel McCarroll 11th (19:35), Kadan Gelsthorpe 19th (21:46) and Carson Kay 20th (22:26).
While St. Theresa was credited with second place, they were tied in the team standings with Bayside, also with 54 points. Bayside had strong runs from Nathan Walmsley who placed second (17:52) and qualified for OFSAA as an individual, Griffin Wanless 14th (20:02), Haissam Douha 15th (20:03) and Sam Cadavid-Rosas (22:33).
Carson Campbell, from Campbellford District High School, won the junior boys race in 17:37 to clinch his OFSAA berth as an individual.
Qualifying as individuals for ENSS were Ethan Miklos and Braeden Lay in the novice boys race. Miklos was ninth in 14:21 and the third individual and Lay was 12th in 15:10 and the fifth individual qualifying time.
Eastside Secondary School’s Theo Lavender also qualified for OFSAA in that race, placing sixth overall (14:09), but with the fastest individual time.
Two other Quinte runner were just shy of qualifying in the novice race as St. Paul’s Ethan Fellows placed 13th (15:14) and was the sixth fastest individual and St. Theresa’s Joey Bonter was 14th (15:24) as the seventh individual.
Nicholson Catholic College placed second as a team in both the novice and senior girls divisions.
In the novice girls race, Peterborough’s St. Peter Catholic Secondary School was the top team with 40 points followed by Nicholson with 51.
Cowling Zeljkovic finished in third (16:04) to lead Nicholson followed by teammates Sophia Saville in sixth (16:49), Samantha Milne 17th (17:41) and Ally Belanger 25th (18:47) to round out the top four. Mia Del Grosso was their fifth finisher in 27th (19:24).
Qualifying as the third and fifth individuals, respectively, were Central Hastings’ Mykelti Potts, seventh overall (16:52), and St. Paul’s Peyton Cormier, ninth overall (17:00). Both have scratched going to OFSAA due to previous Nov. 6 commitments.
St. Peter, with 50 points, and Nicholson with 68, were also the top two teams in the senior girls race.
Nicholson’s top four runners were Sarah Paul in fourth place (25:01), Leah McGillen eighth (25:33), Macarena Guerra 26th (29:22) and Isa Watts-Horricks 30th (30:01). Anna Walsh was 32nd in a time of 30:09.
Quinte Christian’s Taylor Wyngaarden was sixth overall (25:21) and the third fastest individual to qualify for OFSAA while Bayside’s Tamara Singaraja was ninth overall (25:36) and the fifth individual to earn a provincial berth.
There was one local qualifier in the junior girls race as Quinte Christian’s Kaylee Wyngaarden placed third overall (20:07) and was the second fastest individual.
Centennial Secondary School’s Robert Leybourne was the para champion.
Below are the results of the runners from the qualifying teams and individuals as well as athletes from local schools.
