Pirates split weekend games

Following a Provincial Junior Hockey League win on the road Saturday evening in Campbellford, the Picton Pirates were defeated in Amherstview by the Tod Division leaders Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates surrendered the first goal Saturday night at the Campbellford-Seymour Community Centre before scoring five straight en route to a 5-2 victory over the Campbellford Rebels.

Dennis Fisher opened the scoring for Campbellford at the 6:34 mark of the contest before Cole Stevenson answered back for the Pirates at 10:46 at teammate Nate Boomhower gave them the lead at 15:02.

Noah Brant bolstered the Picton lead with goals less than two minutes apart early in the second and Cole Lavender made it 5-1 just past the midway mark of the period. Landon McLellan drew three assists on the Picton goals while Devin Morrison added two helpers.

Goaltender Nolan Lane made 37 saves for the Pirates.

Adam Klass, assisted by Dryden Minifie and Fisher, added a third-period goal for the Rebels. Minifie also earned an assist on Fisher’s opening goal.

Sunday afternoon at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre, the Pirates dropped a 5-1 decision to the Amherstview Jets, which improved to 19-4-0-0.

Amherstview led 1-0 after the first period and 5-0 after two before Brant tallied the lone goal for the Pirates near the 14th minute of the third. McLellan earned an assist. With the three assists from previous game, McLellan now has a team-leading 31 points (11 goals, 20 assists).

This Thursday in Picton, the Pirates (12-10-0-1) will host the Rebels (7-16-0-0). Game time is 7:30 p.m.
