Two athletes born in Belleville made their Olympic debuts this month – Trennt Michaud (Figure Skating)Hallie Clarke (Skeleton)

Photo: Trennt Michaud is a Canadian pair skater. With his skating partner, Lia Pereira, he is the 2025 Four Continents bronze medallist, a three-time Grand Prix medallist, the 2022 CS Golden Spin of Zagreb bronze medallist, and the 2026 Canadian national champion.

Trennt Michaud (Figure Skating): 

Michaud and his partner Lia Pereira finished fifth overall in the pairs event on February 9, 2026. Earlier in the competition, they briefly held the top spot during the short program with a personal best score of 74.60, ultimately entering the free skate in third place before their final fifth-place finish. 

Michaud, a graduate of the Belleville minor sports system, received significant local support, including a $12,000 community fundraiser to send his mother to Italy to watch him compete.

Hallie Clarke (Skeleton): The 21-year-old world champion made her Olympic debut on February 13–14, 2026

Clarke, who became the youngest women’s skeleton world champion in history in 2024, was highlighted as a top medal prospect for Team Canada. A community watch party was held in Belleville at the Owen Gibb Community Hall to support her debut.

Future Olympic Prospects

  • Francis Brennan (Swimming): The 17-year-old Belleville native and member of the Belleville Beast Swim Team is actively training for the 2028 Summer Olympics. In March 2025, he medalled in all six events at the Ontario Age Group Championships and has since accepted a scholarship to Southern Methodist University

Special Olympics and Local Honours

  • Nicole Ferguson: Local Special Olympics athlete Ferguson was awarded the King Charles III’s Coronation Medal in March 2025 for her community impact and athletic excellence.
  • Belleville Public Library: Hosted community viewing events for the 2026 Opening Ceremonies on February 6, 2026, to support local and national

Belleville has a rich history of producing Olympic talent: 

Brian Price: 2008 Gold Medallist (Men’s Eights rowing) and 2012 Silver Medallist.

Elizabeth Manley: 1988 Silver Medallist in Ladies’ singles figure skating.

Brian Orser: Two-time Olympic Silver Medallist (1984, 1988) and flagbearer for Canada.

Britt Benn: 2016 Bronze Medallist in Women’s Rugby Sevens.
