Unleashing the Thunder: A New Era for Trent Hills Hockey
As the 2025–26 season concludes, the organization is already focused on the future. The Scott Drummond Motors Showcase Tournament, scheduled for April 17–18, 2026, serves as a primary scouting event to recruit the next generation of talent for the 2007–2010 age groups. With a modern arena and a committed management team, the Thunder are poised to remain a “force next season”.
Recap: The Trent Hills Thunder have signaled a turning point for junior hockey in Campbellford, Ontario. Following a high-profile rebrand in 2024 from the former Campbellford Rebels, the team has spent the 2025–26 season establishing a new, physical identity in the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL).
A Fresh Start in Campbellford
The transition from the Rebels to the Thunder was more than just a name change; it was a complete overhaul led by a new ownership group, including local businessman David Marsh. The organization’s goal was to revitalize a franchise that had struggled for years, moving into the state-of-the-art Sunny Life Recreation & Wellness Centre to provide a top-tier environment for players and fans alike.
2025–26 Season Highlights
Under the leadership of veteran Head Coach Doug Mathew, who brings over 34 years of experience, the Thunder have become known for their “rough and tumble” style of play. While the team finished toward the bottom of the Tod Division standings, their competitiveness has notably increased, often forcing top-tier opponents like the Picton Pirates to exert maximum effort to secure wins.
- All-Star Recognition: Goaltender Glen was a standout performer, earning a selection to the Eastern Conference All-Star Game with an impressive .917 save percentage.
- Playoff Push: The team entered the 2026 PJHL Playoffs in February, facing off against the Frankford Huskies in a hard-fought opening round.
- Milestones: Veteran Matt Hinan reached a significant career milestone this season, officially playing in his 150th PJHL regular-season game.
Community at the Core
The Thunder’s success is deeply rooted in local support. Organizations like the Campbellford Legion have championed the team as a “heart of the community,” fostering local pride and providing a platform for youth development. This connection is celebrated through events like Emergency Services Night and “Superfan” recognitions for dedicated supporters
