Wellington, ON — The Wellington Dukes organization would like to provide an update to players, staff, supporters, and the broader community regarding the current status of the team.
First and foremost, Ken Clement, Team Governor, would like to correct recent public reporting: to be clear, all operating expenses from this past season were fully covered through team-generated revenues and fundraising efforts. These expenses were not paid personally by coaching staff, contrary to statements recently published in local county media.
Status of the Team
Team owner Ken Clement has entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) with a local businessman from the Bay of Quinte for the purchase of the franchise. “This step represents meaningful progress toward securing the long-term stability of the Dukes and maintaining Junior A hockey in the community,” said Mr. Clement.
While Mr. Clement has received interest and inquiries from other prospective buyers, none were able to provide assurance that the team would remain in Prince Edward County. “For that reason, this agreement with a local businessman reflects the best path forward to help ensure the Dukes stay in Wellington, where they belong,” stated Mr. Clement.
To further support this outcome and protect the team’s future in the community, Mr. Clement has also committed to financing a significant portion of the transaction to help make this specific ownership transition possible.
“Our priority remains clear,” stated Mr. Clement: “to honour commitments, complete a successful ownership transition, and preserve Junior A hockey for our players, fans, and community.”
Mr. Clement expressed gratitude to Chris Miles, Dukes Business Operations Manager and Community Liaison, who has played an integral role in acting as his local liaison with the purchaser while he is out of the country on business.
Chris Miles added, “We appreciate the patience, understanding, and continued support of everyone involved as we work through this process. We hope to have league approval and this transaction complete by the end of May.” The deal is subject to all necessary approvals.
