David Fournier leads Golden Hawks to 5-2 win over Greater Sudbury
The Trenton Golden Hawks jumped into first place in their pool at the Centennial Cup national Jr. A championship in Calgary Monday night.
The Ontario Junior Hockey League champions defeated the Greater Sudbury Cubs 5-2 to improve to 1-1-0-1. They have six points, two more than the Northern Manitoba Blizzard, who play the Kam River Fighting Walleye later tonight.
“Just to bounce back,” was the message from the coaching staff ahead of tonight’s key game, Golden Hawks forward David Fournier told the OJHL. “Obviously, our last game (a 2-1 loss in overtime to Kam River Friday) was kind of disappointing. We just wanted to get back to our game, get our speed going and everything and I think we did a good job tonight.”
Fournier, the Golden Hawks’ top pointgetter (92 in 55 games) during the regular season, led the way with two goals, both in the first period.
Tied 2-2 after two, the Golden Hawks broke things open with goals from Jonathan Pylypuik and Aaron Brown 11 seconds apart before the third period was 2:50 old. Thomas Kuipers finished the scoring at 13:25.
Ryan Sanborn, the OJHL playoff MVP, earned the win. Shots on goal were 28-28.
Taeo Artichuk and Corbin Roach had two-assist games.
Family members and fans shouting “Go Hawks Go” sent the players to the rink this morning with an honour guard leading to the bus from the team hotel.

“That was awesome,” Fournier said. “It gave us a good boost of energy before the game.”
A visit to teammate Dylan Woulds’ family home over the weekend was a nice break from hockey, Fournier said.
“His parents did a great job of welcoming us all into their home and hosting a team meal,” Fournier said. “It felt like home for a moment.”
The Golden Hawks complete the preliminary round of the tournament when they face Grand Prairie, Alberta (1-0-1-0) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Pool play winds up Wednesday.
The quarterfinals go Friday, the semis on Saturday and the Centennial Cup final will be played Sunday at 7 p.m. ET.
Fournier said the players aren’t peeking at the standings and possible playoff scenarios.
“Just looking at the next game and trying to get those three points,” he said.
