The Environmental 360 Solutions U16 AAA Red Devils …Mac Chisholm was in on all three goals, scoring two, including the clincher in overtime, with Nate Rashotte assisting on both tallies while linemate Isaac Tracze netted the winner’s other goal as the Devils eeked out a 3-2 verdict over the visiting Whitby Wildcats Sunday at the Community Centre in Tweed.
The win came less than 24 hours after Quinte had beaten the Central Ontario Wolves in Scugog 4-3. The Devils also won that one in extra time with Ryan Foley ending it, but on Sunday Chisholm proved to be the overtime hero, putting things on ice just 42 seconds into the fourth period, seconds after he and Nate Rashotte broke over the Whitby blueline playing hot-potato with the puck. The pair finished off a series of give-and-goes with Chisholm feeding a hard pass toward Rashotte through the crease, but the puck ricocheted off the goalie’s leg and into the net to bring a sudden end to the contest.
Chisholm opened the scoring at 3:03 of the first period, converting a Rashotte pass from the corner, scoring with a hard wrist shot from the slot before the Wildcats evened the count five minutes later. Tracze went bar-down when Chisholm set him up in front for the second period’s only goal then Whitby forced the extra set, tying it up 2-2 midway through the third period to set the stage for Chisholm’s heroics in overtime. Tracze (2) and Rashotte were tagged with Quinte’s only three minor penalties. Ayden Mullen of the Red Devils and the Wildcats’ Jayden Groeneveld were solid in their respective nets, both coming up with a number game-saving stops throughout.
In Scugog Saturday night Lily Reid took the win in net, backstopping the Devils to the 4-3 victory over Central Ontario. Quinte fell behind 2-0 in the opening period but got out of the set down 2-1 ahead of a pair of goals in the first half of the third frame that shot the Devils up 3-2 following a scoreless second. They almost got out of it with a 3-2 triumph, but the Wolves delayed the end result, scoring their third goal with 37 seconds remaining in the third period. Foley iced that one at 1:46 of overtime. Henry Fisher put a puck in on the powerplay then added two assists in the Devils’ cause, while Seth Scaletta and Ryan Sherwin counted a goal apiece. Blake Munnings assisted twice with single helpers coming from Jake Gawley, Pierson Clute and Chisholm.
The weekend wins give the Red Devils 21 points in the standings and shove them to within a point of third-place Barrie in the OMHA East Conference. Barrie trails second-place Ajax-Pickering by the same single point spread while York-Simcoe leads the way with 24 points, one more than Ajax.
On Deck…The regular season takes a back seat this week while the International Silver Stick Tournament in Whitby is front-and-centre for the Red Devils. The 30-team U16 portion of the tournament starts Thursday with Quinte opening at 6:45pm against the Toronto Marlboros at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre. They’re back on the ice Friday for an 8:am game with the Huron-Perth Lakers then that afternoon they take on the Niagara North Stars at 4:45. The Devils wrap up the round-robin at 3:20 on Saturday opposite the Buffalo Jr. Sabres before the playoffs begin Saturday evening and carry on through Sunday.
The Gillespie’s Tree Service U15 Red Devils were on the road for a pair of games this weekend trying to pull their way out of a logjam at the top of the standings. Saturday afternoon’s action took place in Woodville against the Central Ontario Wolves. Trent Clow got the scoring going in the first tucking in a shot caused by a hard forecheck to take a 1-0 lead. That score would stand until midway through the 2nd when Lauchlan Whelan finished off a chance created by Jax Martin and Andrew Laurin to go up 2-0. Before the end of the frame Whelan would bang in a rebound after Laurin did some tough work on the zone entry to set up Martin for a one timer and a 3-0 lead heading into the break. Laurin finished off a chance from Whelan and Austin Preston on the power play for the 4th goal of the day. COW would get one back on an unlucky bounce, but Nathan Ferriss stood tall in net as he had all game and the squad took home a 4-1 win and vaulted to 3rd in the standings heading to Peterborough on Sunday to take on the 2nd place Petes in their first meeting of the year. The squad fell into an early 2-0 hole before Lauchlan Whelan got the offensive ball rolling off a nice feed from Andrew Laurin. The Petes answered back twice to take a 4-1 lead into the break. QRD scored the next 2 goals off the sticks of Laurin tipping in a Noah Kennedy shot with another helper going to Brechen Aird and Lawson Minifie batting in a Trent Clow rebound. Sadly that was a close as the game would get with the Petes taking the win in this one.
The team is looking forward to a reset hosting Ajax in a rare Wednesday night home game and a full effort when league leading Barrie comes to town on Saturday. Puck drop is 8:15pm Wednesday on the FDC pad and 3:45pm on the Mackay pad Saturday.
