Friday, October 23, 2026, vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (NHL Affiliate: Pittsburgh Penguins)
The Set-Up
After a five day break, the Belleville Senators are back in action, kicking off a road trip in Pennsylvania against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Coming off a 4-2 win over the Toronto Marlies last Sunday, the Senators will look to carry that momentum into a three-game stretch this weekend. Belleville saw contributions from several players in the victory, including standout performances from Samuel Blais, who opened the scoring, and Phil Tomasino, who added a goal of his own. Both forwards also did their part in winning tough battles along the boards and in the corners. The win brings the Senators to a 3-2-2-0 record, tying them for third in the North Division with eight points. Now, the BSens turn their attention to the Penguins, who have had a similar start to their season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has picked up points in three of its last four games, with their most recent victory coming in a 6-3 win over the Cleveland Monsters. The Penguins boast a solid mix of speed and experience, along with promising young talent, including 2022 14th-overall pick Rutger McGroarty, who has played an important role in the team’s early success. Tonight marks the first meeting of the season between these two sides and presents another test for Belleville as it prepares for a busy stretch of hockey. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. tonight.
Previous History
Belleville fared well against the Penguins last season, splitting the season series. Their most recent meeting came on March 20th of last season in Belleville, where the Senators picked up a point despite falling in a shootout. Tyler Boucher had the lone goal in regulation during the hard fought 2-1 loss. The Senators hold a 7-6-0-1 all-time record against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and will look to add another win to the column this evening.
Roster Notes
The Senators have made a few roster moves ahead of their road trip. Blake Montgomery has been activated from injured reserve and could make his season debut this weekend. Montgomery made his Senators debut late last season after wrapping up his college career with the Wisconsin Badgers. In goal, Jonas Johansson has been recalled to Ottawa. Johansson has posted a 2.92 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage this season, along with a 3-1-1 record. In a corresponding move, Kevin Reidler has been recalled from the ECHL’s Allen Americans, where the young goaltender has yet to make a start. Full roster and lineup details will be available closer to puck drop through the team’s social media channels (@BellevilleSens).
Who to Watch
In his first season as a Senator, Phil Tomasino has made an early impact on Belleville’s offence. The Mississauga native has recorded five points (two goals, three assists) through his first seven games. The 25-year-old forward has showcased his offensive instincts and playmaking ability, creating opportunities for himself and his teammates while providing a consistent presence in Belleville’s attack. Originally selected 24th overall by the Nashville Predators in 2019, Tomasino has also gained valuable NHL experience, recording 95 points across 218 career games. Having contributed at both the NHL and AHL levels, he will look to build on his strong start in Belleville and continue playing an important role in the Senators’ offence.
Avery Hayes has started the season on a tear for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, recording nine points through his first six games. The young forward has yet to play a game without registering a point, showcasing his prowess upfront and ability to make an impact night after night. His early production has made him a key part of the Penguins’ attack, providing a consistent offensive presence as he continues to establish himself among the organization’s promising young players. With Hayes continuing to produce at a high rate, he will be a player to watch as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton look to maintain their momentum.
