U10 Red Devils Are OMHA Red Hat Champions!!
The Breakaway Fuels U10 Red Devils travelled to Newmarket this weekend and came home with the OMHA Championship!!!
Friday morning saw the Devils kick off the OMHA finals weekend with the first game of the tournament against the Barrie Colts. This one was all Red Devils as they scored 32 seconds in and never looked back on their way to an 8-1 win. After some rest and recharging the boys squared off against the OMHA west’s number two seed the Hamilton Steel. Once again, the young devils started the game off quick with a goal just 11 seconds in. They would continue to keep their foot on the gas and came away with a convincing 6-1 win.
Saturday had the Breakaway Fuels boys playing just a single game against a tough Guelph Gryphons squad. This one was back and forth with numerous chances at both ends and the goalies stole the show. Quinte took this much tighter match by a 3-1 score and booked their spot for Sunday with the number one seed in the Semi-finals.
Sunday started early with an 8am game against their eastern rivals the Central Ontario Wolves. Central would get the early jump this time scoring just 27 seconds in before Quinte would answer 47 seconds later. The first period would end tied 1-1. The second period saw the young devils open things up and score three more to take a 4-2 lead into the third. After an early goal to increase things to 5-2 the Wolves flipped the script and scored three straight in eight minutes to tie the score. This one would need overtime to find a winner and a spot in the finals. After six and a half nail biting minutes Jackson Simpson made a power move to the net and buried the winner and sent the Quinte faithful in attendance into a frenzy.
Four hours later the puck dropped on the OMHA final and a rematch with the Barrie Colts. Much like in the semis, the Colts jumped off to an early lead in a fast-paced game and the Devils would trail 1-0 after the first. A power play goal by Kolton Solmes (Kai Mackie) would even the score five minutes into the second but just forty seconds later the Colts would strike again. It was end-to-end action throughout the second period until Reid Haley would find the back of the Colts net late in the second to tie the game again. This nerve-wracking game would come down to the final fifteen minute frame to decide the U10 AAA champion. The young devils dug deep and found the energy they needed to score four unanswered goals in the third period and walk away with the Red Hats and Quinte’s first ever U10 OMHA Championship. Goal scorers in the third were Mackie (Solmes, Ethan Dowling), Greyson Rennie unassisted, Haley (Mackie) and Jackson Simpson (Wade Robinson).
The entire coaching staff is extremely proud of the team’s effort and the way the represented Quinte both on and off the ice this weekend and the entire season. In total this team of young athletes finished their season with an astonishing 74-6-3 record!
